For our youth to fully experience the incredible benefits of youth sports, we must ensure they have the opportunity to participate. Sports participation can serve as a powerful catalyst for lifelong success. A report from the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition Science Board outlines these positive impacts by highlighting how youth sports positively impact mental, emotional, social, and physical health. Moreover, these benefits often extend into adulthood, shaping their social, economic, and physical well-being.

The power of sports is undeniable. For those of us who have played or been involved in sports, we’ve seen firsthand how they can empower individuals and transform lives. This is why it’s essential to provide opportunities for more kids to experience the benefits of youth sports.

However, participation rates are declining. According to 2024 data from the National Survey of Children’s Health, only 53.8% of youth aged 6 to 17 played sports in 2022. This is a reduction of almost 5% since 2017. That means approximately 23 million kids missed out on the benefits of youth sports in 2022. Considering the incredible benefits, that’s 23 million too many.

Benefits of Youth Sports

One of the greatest benefits of youth sports are the valuable life lessons that are learned. These lessons include the importance of hard work, perseverance, self-confidence, and teamwork. These are qualities that are crucial for success both on and off the field. Additionally, sports provide a framework for developing these skills at an early age. These skills prepare kids to face challenges and seize opportunities throughout their lives.

The profound benefits of youth sports fuel my passion for ensuring that all children have the chance to play. While sports may hold different meanings for different people, their positive impact on participants is beyond question. But, what prevents kids from playing sports and experiencing these benefits?

Barriers to Sports Participation

According to Health and Human Services, three primary barriers stand out:

  1. Access to Facilities or Programs
  2. Cost
  3. Lack of Interest or Knowledge

These are challenging hurdles to overcome considering their scope.  Limited economic resources and knowledge can impact much more than just a kids ability to play a sport.  However, it is unfortunate that it does impact sports participation at all. It’s disheartening for any barriers to exist that prevent kids from enjoying the benefits of youth sports. The benefits that could shape the rest of their life.

How We Can Help Kids Experience the Benefits of Youth Sports

Scholarships can play a critical role in overcoming these barriers. By reducing financial hurdles, scholarship programs can open the door for kids to participate and thrive in sports. Although, it takes resources to run a youth sports program, providing scholarships can make a huge difference. The difference between a child sitting on the sidelines and one who experiences the life-changing benefits of youth sports.

In addition, if you’re passionate about a particular sport, you can help make a difference in your community as well. Whether by coaching, mentoring, or introducing a new program, you can help young athletes unlock these benefits for themselves.

At Ball to Life, our mission is to make youth sports more accessible. We’re committed to donating a portion of our earnings to youth sports programs, especially for children in need. Additionally, our free training programs aim to support kids who may lack access to proper coaching or resources. We believe in the transformative power of sports—and we hope you do too.

Let’s Get Kids Playing Sports Again

The benefits of youth sports are far-reaching. Impacting children’s physical health, emotional well-being, and future success. Sports don’t just build better athletes; they help shape healthier, happier, and more confident adults.

It’s our responsibility to guide the next generation toward experiencing these benefits firsthand. Getting kids into the game is the first step—but it’s only part of the solution.

Stay tuned for next week’s discussion, where we’ll explore how to keep kids in the game and ensure they remain engaged in sports for the long term. Together, we can make a lasting impact by focusing on what truly matters. Part of that is removing barriers, creating opportunities, and unlocking the full potential of the benefits of youth sports.
