Dreams are an essential part of life. Without them, what is life? With our youth, we must encourage them to not only dream but dream big. Imagine this: five seconds remaining in the Super Bowl, your team is down by 4. The quarterback drops back and airs it out to an open receiver down the sideline. The pass is CAUGHT!!! Touchdown! Chaos erupts as your team celebrates the victory—and they’re celebrating YOU! Your 5-year-old self runs wild after catching the Super Bowl-winning touchdown.
Let Our Youth Dream Big
For many kids, moments like these aren’t just daydreams—they’re the fuel for their imagination. If you were like me, you may have run through the hallways tossing a football in the air, diving onto your bed (or “end zone”) to make a miraculous game-winning catch.
Maybe the Super Bowl wasn’t the center of your dreams. Take a moment to think back to when you were 5 years old. What was your dream? Wasn’t it amazing to let your imagination soar?
The Power of Big Dreams
A child’s imagination can run wild when it’s wrapped up in what they’re going to achieve someday—whether it’s on the court, the field, the diamond, the mat, or the track. This is the magic of sports. It allows kids to dream big and visualize incredible possibilities.
As parents and coaches, it’s crucial to nurture these dreams. Let them dream big! Don’t be the person who crushes their aspirations. Encourage them to pursue their dreams, work hard, and be the best THEY can be at whatever they choose. The world will have enough doubters and critics—don’t be one of them. Be their biggest believer and motivator.
Achieving Your Dreams
To the Athletes: If you have a dream that’s been alive in your mind since you were 5 years old, go after it! Put in the work every single day, have fun, and chase that dream. What do you have to lose? Enjoy the process, embrace the ups and downs, and stay true to yourself throughout the journey.
Yes, there will be naysayers. Some may say your goal is impossible or that you’re not capable. They might be right, or they might not. Either way, it doesn’t matter. Whether you reach the stars or fall short, aiming high will always take you further than staying grounded. So, go for it!
The most important thing is learning to work for what you want. You might fall short at times, and your dreams may evolve, but what truly matters is the process. It’s about getting back up, pushing forward, and setting new goals. Be fearless. Don’t be afraid to fail, and always strive to be the best YOU that you can be.
Dream Big, Work Hard, and Have Fun
Whether you’re 5, 17, or 47, don’t be afraid to take your shot. Yes, achieving your dreams will require effort, but when you’re passionate about something, even the hard work becomes exciting. That’s how you know you’ve found your purpose.
So, dream big. Be willing to work for it. Embrace the setbacks and celebrate the victories. And most importantly, have fun along the way. Because at the end of the day, the journey matters just as much as the destination.
