The Start of Something Special: Ball to Life’s First Leadership & Mindset Camp

October 18th, 2025 was the start of something special. Our first Beyond the Play – Youth Leadership & Mindset Camp had 25 athletes register from 6 different towns in southwest Wisconsin — 14 in the 4th–6th grade group and 11 in the 7th–8th grade group — and the energy they brought filled the gym from start to finish.

From the first whistle, it was clear this wasn’t your typical camp. Yes, we trained. We worked on agility, coordination, and focus. But more than that, we learned what it means to lead, to communicate, and to trust one another.

Communication. Trust. Growth.

One of the biggest highlights was the blindfolded leadership activity and obstacle course — a simple but powerful exercise that pushed athletes to rely on their teammates. The laughter, encouragement, and teamwork that came out of it said everything. It reminded us that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice — it’s about listening, trusting, and lifting others up.

Teamwork in Motion

Another key part of the day centered on agility, speed, and coordination training. These drills weren’t just about movement — they were about mindset. Athletes had to work together as a team to complete different tasks, staying positive and encouraging one another through both chaos and calm. They learned to adapt, communicate, and keep pushing forward even when things didn’t go perfectly.

I was incredibly proud of how each athlete handled the challenges. For some, these drills were brand new, but they tackled every activity with focus, energy, and a positive attitude. It was leadership in motion — athletes learning to support each other, compete together, and grow together.

Building Confidence Through Coaching

As the sessions went on, confidence began to shine. Early in each session, there were a few kids that stood quietly on the sidelines, unsure about what was coming next. By the end of camp, those same kids were standing in front of their peers, serving as the “Coach”, teaching a drill of their choice and leading with pride. Seeing that transformation — from hesitation to leadership — was one of the most rewarding moments of the entire day.

Smiles That Said It All

When I went back through the photos, one thing stood out — the smiles on the faces of the athletes. That’s what makes it all worth it. The effort, the planning, the energy — all of it. These athletes learned that leadership isn’t just about what you do on the court; it’s about who you are when no one’s watching, and how you make others feel when they’re with you.

This camp was one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done. My sincere thanks to my wife Laura and my son Nate for their help throughout the day, and to Adam Phillips for joining us to help lead and inspire the athletes. The mission of Ball to Life has always been simple: to use sports as a vehicle to teach life. This camp reminded me that the message is being heard — and the next generation of leaders is ready to rise.

What’s Next

This camp is just the beginning. What we learned through this process has only fueled us to make future experiences even bigger and better.

In 2026, we’ll be launching the Beyond the Play Leadership Academy — a long-term leadership development program designed for young athletes who want to continue growing in both mindset and character.

Our one-day camps will continue to offer powerful, hands-on leadership experiences, while the Leadership Academy will provide an extended opportunity for deeper growth, reflection, and mentorship. We also plan to expand our reach by including high school athletes and hosting custom camps for teams and community groups.

We’re excited about what’s ahead and hope to make Ball to Life a premiere leadership opportunity in southwest Wisconsin. Feedback and insight are always welcome as we continue to build something meaningful — together.
