Beyond the Play – Player Spotlight
Pajessa Baker

Some athletes stand out for what they do on the field. Others may stand out for who they are outside the game. Pajessa Baker does both—a competitor, a leader, and someone whose impact, driven by faith and effort, reaches far beyond the game.
At Ball to Life, we believe sports are about more than wins and losses. They help shape young athletes into leaders, teammates, and individuals capable of making a positive impact in their communities.
The Beyond the Play – Player Spotlight recognizes high school athletes who demonstrate character, leadership, perseverance, and dedication both on and off the field. Each year, Ball to Life selects a small number of athletes whose stories represent the values that sports are meant to teach—hard work, integrity, service, and resilience.
Pajessa’s story is a reflection of those values in action, reminding us that the true impact of sports extends far beyond the scoreboard.
Pajessa Baker – Leading Through Faith
As I got to know Pajessa through the nomination and selection process, one thing became very clear: faith plays a central role in her life. It’s inspiring to hear her speak about her faith, but even more inspiring is how she uses that faith to guide her growth as both an athlete and a person.
What quickly stood out was how her faith drives her to serve others. Whether it’s helping a teammate understand a drill or volunteering her time in the community, Pajessa is someone who consistently looks for ways to step in and help when needed.
Her confidence also seems to come from that same foundation. Pajessa isn’t afraid to try new things, even if failure is part of the process. She understands that growth often requires stepping outside your comfort zone, and she approaches challenges knowing that her life is part of a greater purpose.
What may be most impressive is the level of faith awareness she carries at such a young age. One comment she shared has stayed with me:
“I trust that God has a plan regardless of what is happening.”
That perspective helps her stay grounded during difficult moments and gives her the strength to keep pushing forward when things get tough.
Inspiration in Her Story
Pajessa is a triplet — she has a sister and a brother — and was raised by her mother with the support of her grandparents. She gives tremendous credit to her mom, who constantly worked to provide opportunities for all three children to try new things and stay involved.
She also speaks often about her “village” — the people who have supported her along the way. Her grandparents, in particular, have played an important role in her life, something that became very clear in our conversation.
Pajessa expressed deep appreciation for her mom, grandparents, and everyone in her support system. She credits them with helping create opportunities that allowed her to experience new things, grow as a person, and develop as an athlete.
According to Pajessa, that village has supported her through every step of her journey and continues to encourage her as she looks toward the future.
Giving Back and Making a Difference
For several years, Pajessa has been actively involved in her community’s softball program, serving as a youth umpire and helping support younger players.
When we talked about this part of her life, it was clear how meaningful that experience has been for her. Pajessa shared that the kids she worked with inspired her just as much as she may have helped them.
She explained that spending time around younger athletes motivated her to be a positive example — encouraging her to keep improving both as a player and as a person.
Personally, I think Pajessa may be selling herself a little short. While those kids may have inspired her, it’s very likely that the impact she had on them was even greater than she realizes.
Pajessa’s Superpower: Work Ethic and Determination

When speaking with people who know Pajessa, two words came up repeatedly: work ethic and determination.
One person who knows her well described her this way:
“Pajessa is known for her strong work ethic and relentless determination. Day in and day out, she shows a high level of commitment by pushing herself to improve and giving full effort in every practice and competition.”
Her softball coach echoed that same sentiment. Whether the drill was basic or advanced, Pajessa approached it with the same mindset — a commitment to improving and mastering every detail.
If something didn’t come easily, she didn’t get discouraged. She simply kept working until she figured it out.
That mindset will take her far in life. Success rarely happens overnight, and the willingness to keep putting in the work is one of the most powerful traits an athlete — or a person — can possess.
In sports and in life, talent can open doors — but it’s work ethic that determines how far an athlete or person ultimately goes.
Mindset Matters in Sports and Life
At Ball to Life, we place a strong emphasis on the power of mindset in sports and life. During my conversation with Pajessa, it became clear that she understands just how important mindset truly is.
She shared this powerful reflection:
“Mindset can make or break you. Learning how to switch my mindset was one of the most monumental and challenging things for me growing as an athlete. I can’t stress just how much a positive mindset has affected my life. Your mindset affects everything way more than you or anyone realizes.”
Mindset is powerful. Developing the ability to reset, refocus, and stay positive through adversity is something every athlete must learn. Based on our conversation, Pajessa has already taken important steps in building that mental strength, and I hope she continues to develop it throughout her life.
In Pajessa’s Words
1. What is one of your favorite sports memories, and why does it stand out to you?
Softball my sophomore year. It was a non-conference game against a pretty good team (Belmont). I had already hit one homer that game. The lead kept changing all game. It was the top of the 7th inning and I hit another to tie up the game and send us into extra innings.
I will never forget the look on my grandpa’s face as I rounded the bases and how he said, “That’s twooo!!”
We ended up winning the game in nine innings.
2. What lessons has sports taught you about life, leadership, or teamwork?
Sports have taught me more than a classroom ever did. I learned how to pick myself up after a mistake. I learned how to work with people you may not like. I learned how to bite my tongue.
With the right mentality you can do anything. If something is scary or hard, just take the next step.
My favorite lesson though is this: if you do not love your life, change it. Be the first. Someone has to be the first — why not you? If you do not love your life or the way things are going, change it.
3. What are you most proud of about yourself outside of sports?
I am most proud of my love for Jesus. I love sharing my faith, letting His light shine through me, meeting and talking to strangers, spreading His love, giving hope to others, and telling people how He has shaped me.
4. How do you think sports will influence your future?
Sports participation will not only impact my adult life — it will shape it.
Sports drive me to stay active, eat well, lift weights, and live a healthy lifestyle. They will influence not only how I treat myself, but also how I handle adversity and difficult situations.
Because of sports, I will carry forward better stress management, time management, social skills, and healthy habits.
5. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you?
There is more to me — and all of us — than sports. Sports may shape who we are, but we are all more than our sport.
Looking to the Future
Pajessa plans to attend Grace College, a private Christian college, where she will be a member of the cheer team. While she is currently undecided on a major, she has several interests she is exploring — including sports photography.
She also hopes to participate in missionary work after high school.
Based on the short time I’ve had the opportunity to know Pajessa, one thing is clear: wherever her path leads, I have no doubt that she will make a positive impact.
Pajessa’s advice for younger athletes:
Never stop pushing yourself to be better than you were yesterday — and never lose your faith, no matter what happens.
